Prevención:

Se recomiendan las vacunas para viajar por fuera de los Estados Unidos, Canadá, Europa del Norte, Australia y Nueva Zelanda y durante brotes epidémicos. Si va a viajar a un área donde hay fiebre tiroidea, pregúntele al médico si debe llevar paquetes de electrolitos por si se enferma.

La vacuna no siempre es completamente efectiva y los viajeros en riesgo deben beber sólo agua hervida o embotellada e ingerir alimentos bien cocidos. Están en marcha estudios para desarrollar una vacuna oral viva atenuada contra la tifoidea que parecen ser prometedores.

El tratamiento del agua, la eliminación de desechos y la protección de los suministros de alimentos contra la contaminación son importantes medidas de salud pública. No se debe permitir que los portadores de tifoidea trabajen como manipuladores de alimentos.
