Es una infección prolongada (crónica) de la piel debido a ciertos hongos.
La esporotricosis es causada por el hongo Sporothrix schenckii que se encuentra en la vegetación. La infección ocurre comúnmente cuando la piel se rompe al manipular materiales vegetales como rosales, zarzas o tierra abonada.
La esporotricosis puede ser una enfermedad ocupacional de granjeros, horticultores, cultivadores de rosas y trabajadores de viveros. La esporotricosis generalizada (diseminada) se puede desarrollar en personas con sistemas inmunitarios comprometidos cuando inhalan polvo lleno de esporas.
