Definición:

Es una enfermedad grave y a menudo mortal que puede ocurrir en humanos y en primates (monos, gorilas).

La fiebre hemorrágica del Ébola ha sido noticia a nivel mundial debido a su potencial destructivo.

Causas:

La fiebre hemorrágica del Ébola (fiebre del Ébola) es causada por un virus que pertenece a la familia llamada Filoviridae, del cual los científicos han identificado cuatro tipos. Se ha informado que tres de estos tipos causan la enfermedad en humanos: virus del Ébola-Zaire; virus del Ébola-Sudán y virus del Ébola-Costa de Marfil. La enfermedad en humanos ha estado limitada hasta ahora a partes de África.

Un número muy pequeño de personas en los Estados Unidos que fueron infectadas con el cuarto tipo del virus, conocido como Ébola Reston, no desarrollaron ningún signo de la enfermedad.

La enfermedad se puede transmitir a los humanos a partir de animales infectados y materiales animales. El Ébola también se puede propagar entre humanos por el contacto cercano con fluidos corporales infectados o a través de agujas infectadas en un hospital.
