El tratamiento incluye antibióticos, con mayor frecuencia tetraciclina, doxiciclina o penicilina.
La tasa de mortalidad de pacientes con LBRF no tratados varía de un 10 a 70% y para pacientes con TBRF, es de 4 a 10%. Si se realiza un tratamiento a tiempo, la tasa de mortalidad se reduce. Las personas que han desarrollado coma, miocarditis, problemas hepáticos y neumonía tienen un riesgo más alto de muerte.
