Toxoplasmosis congénita
Definición:
La toxoplasmosis congénita es un grupo de sÃntomas y caracterÃsticas causados por infección del feto con el organismo toxoplasma gondii .
Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
La infección fetal con toxoplasmosis se produce cuando una madre embarazada no inmune es afectada inicialmente con toxoplasmosis o tiene antecedentes de toxoplasmosis en embarazos anteriores.
Para la madre, la enfermedad suele ser leve y puede no ser evidente; sin embargo, la infección del feto puede ocasionar problemas severos. La infección en las primeras etapas del embarazo provoca problemas más graves que la infección más tardÃa.
La toxoplasmosis congénita se caracteriza por daño a los ojos, sistema nervioso, piel y oÃdos. Los recién nacidos suelen tener un bajo peso al nacer , agrandamiento del hÃgado y del bazo, ictericia , anemia , petequias (finos puntos rojos en la piel causados por hemorragias de los capilares) y daño a los ojos evidenciado por la inflamación de la retina .
