Tratamiento:

Los medicamentos que se utilizan para tratar este trastorno son, entre otros:

Eflornitina (únicamente para T. gambiense)
Melarsoprol
Pentamidina
Suramina (Antrypol)
Algunos pacientes pueden recibir politerapia

Expectativas (pronóstico):

Sin tratamiento, la muerte se puede presentar dentro de los seis meses siguientes a partir de una insuficiencia cardíaca o de la infección por T. rhodesiense misma. La infección por T.gambiense produce la clásica "enfermedad del sueño" y empeora con mayor rapidez, con frecuencia, durante unas pocas semanas. Ambas enfermedades se deben tratar inmediatamente.

Complicaciones:

Las complicaciones abarcan lesión relacionada con el hecho de quedarse dormido al conducir un vehículo o desempeñar otras actividades y el daño progresivo al sistema nervioso. El sueño se vuelve incontrolable a medida que la enfermedad empeora y finalmente lleva a que se presente coma.

Se puede presentar inflamación del corazón (miocarditis).
