Definición:

Es una enfermedad viral transmitida por mosquitos.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La fiebre del dengue es causada por varios virus relacionados (cuatro arbovirus diferentes) y es trasmitida por la picadura de mosquitos, entre los cuales el más común es el Aedes aegypti que se encuentra en las regiones tropicales y subtropicales, que incluyen:

• El sudeste asiático
• El archipiélago de Indonesia en la parte noreste de Australia
• África subsahariana
• Sur y Centro América

La fiebre del dengue se observa más en personas que viajan por el mundo. Generalmente dura una semana o más y, aunque es molesta, no es mortal. El diagnóstico apropiado depende de si el viajero informa a su médico de cualquier visita a áreas del mundo donde se sabe que se presenta esta fiebre.

La fiebre del dengue no se debe confundir con la fiebre del dengue hemorrágico, la cual es una enfermedad aparte y frecuentemente mortal.
