Definición:

Es la infestación por una de las dos especies de tenia: Hymenolepis nana o Hymenolepis diminuta.

Causas:

La hymenolepis habita en los climas cálidos y es común en el sur de los Estados Unidos. Los huevos de estos gusanos son consumidos por insectos.

Los humanos y otros animales resultan infectados cuando voluntaria o involuntariamente consumen material contaminado por insectos. En una persona infectada, el gusano puede completar su ciclo total de vida en el intestino, de manera que la infección puede persistir durante años.

En los humanos, las infecciones con Hymenolepis nana son mucho más comunes que las infecciones con Hymenolepis diminuta. Anteriormente, estas infecciones eran comunes en el sudeste de los Estados Unidos y han sido descritas en ambientes de hacinamiento y en personas recluidas en instituciones. Sin embargo, la enfermedad se presenta en todo el mundo.
