Kuru
Definición:
Es una neuropatÃa que empeora lentamente y se debe a una proteÃna infecciosa (prión) que se encuentra en el tejido cerebral humano contaminado.
Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
El kuru es una enfermedad extremadamente rara que se encuentra casi de manera exclusiva entre los habitantes de Nueva Guinea, quienes practicaban una forma de canibalismo en la cual se comÃan los cerebros de las personas muertas como parte del ritual funerario.
El kuru produce cambios neurodegenerativos parecidos a los de la enfermedad de Creutzfeldt-Jakob . Enfermedades similares aparecen en las vacas como la encefalopatÃa espongiforme bovina, también llamada la enfermedad de las vacas locas.
El principal factor de riesgo para el desarrollo del kuru es el consumo de tejido cerebral humano que puede contener partÃculas infectadas.
