La dificultad para deglutir y la incapacidad para alimentarse uno mismo llevan a que se presente desnutrición o inanición.

El tiempo que toma hasta que se manifiestan síntomas (período de incubación) puede ser hasta 30 años o más.

Signos y exámenes:

Un examen neurológico puede mostrar cambios en la coordinación y en la capacidad de caminar.
