Botulismo infantil
Definición:
Es una enfermedad potencialmente mortal en la cual las bacterias Clostridium botulinum proliferan dentro del tracto gastrointestinal del bebé.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:
El Clostridium botulinum es un organismo esporulador o formador de esporas común en la naturaleza. Las esporas se pueden encontrar en la tierra y en ciertos alimentos como la miel y algunos almÃbares de maÃz.
La enfermedad se presenta principalmente en bebés pequeños entre tres semanas y seis meses de edad, aunque se ha informado sobre comienzos de la enfermedad en bebés con apenas tres dÃas de nacidos y en niños de hasta un año de edad.
Entre los factores de riesgo se puede mencionar la ingestión de miel en los bebés, permanecer en lugares donde hay tierra contaminada, lactancia materna y tener menos de una deposición al dÃa durante un perÃodo de más de dos meses.
