Laringitis

Definición:

Es una inflamación de la laringe (caja de la voz) generalmente asociada con ronquera o pérdida de la voz.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La laringe está ubicada en la parte superior de las vías respiratorias que van a los pulmones, también llamada tráquea. Cuando las cuerdas vocales se infectan o inflaman, se hinchan. Esto puede causar ronquera y ocasionalmente obstrucción de las vías aéreas.

La forma más común de laringitis es una enfermedad infecciosa usualmente causada por un virus. Puede también ser causada por una infección bacteriana o por un resfriado común , bronquitis , gripe o neumonía .

Con frecuencia, la laringitis ocurre durante una infección de las vías respiratorias superiores y es una condición que se resuelve espontáneamente. La laringitis común no está asociada normalmente con ningún tipo de dificultad respiratoria.

Algunas formas de laringitis se presentan en los niños y pueden llevar a obstrucción respiratoria significativa o letal. Entre ellas están el crup y la epiglotitis .
