Prevención:

Evitar las picaduras de los mosquitos simúlidos o flebótomos es la forma más inmediata de protección. Las picaduras se pueden prevenir:

  • Usando repelentes de insectos
  • Usando ropa protectora
  • Poniendo mallas en las ventanas
  • Colocando toldillos de malla fina alrededor de las camas (en áreas donde se presenta la enfermedad)

Son igualmente importantes las medidas de salud pública para reducir las poblaciones de flebótomos y los estanques de animales. No existen vacunas ni medicamentos preventivos para la leishmaniasis.
