Tratamiento:
Los principales medicamentos para tratar la leishmaniosis son los compuestos que contienen antimonio y abarcan:
- Antimoniato de meglumina
- Estibogluconato de sodio
Otros de los medicamentos que se pueden utilizar son:
- Pentamidina
- Amfotericina B
Puede necesitarse una cirugÃa plástica para corregir la desfiguración por las lesiones faciales destructivas (leishmaniosis mucocutánea) y la extirpación del bazo ( esplenectomÃa ) en casos resistentes a los medicamentos (leishmaniosis visceral).
Expectativas (pronóstico):
La tasa de curación con los compuestos de antimonio es alta y el tratamiento debe realizarse antes de que se comprometa el sistema inmune. La leishmaniosis mucocutánea puede ocasionar una desfiguración apreciable.
Complicaciones:
- Desfiguración facial
- Infecciones mortales ocasionadas por el daño del sistema inmunitario
- Hemorragia
Situaciones que requieren asistencia médica:
Se debe buscar asistencia médica si se presentan sÃntomas que sugieren la presencia de leishmaniosis después de haber estado en áreas endémicas de Leishmania.
