Siringomielia

Definición:

Es un daño a la médula espinal, debido a la formación de un área llena de líquido dentro de la misma médula.

La acumulación de líquido que se observa en la siringomielia puede ser el resultado de un traumatismo de la médula espinal , tumores de la misma médula o defectos congénitos.

El área llena de líquido (cavidad) casi siempre comienza a formarse en la zona del cuello y se expande lentamente, ejerciendo presión sobre la médula espinal y causando daño en forma lenta.

La siringomielia puede ocurrir en ciertos problemas del desarrollo del sistema nervioso, incluyendo las malformaciones de Chiari.
