Síntomas:

Cuando se presentan tumores de la fosa posterior, los síntomas se desarrollan de manera muy temprana y pueden abarcar:

Ataxia (marcha descoordinada)
Somnolencia
Dolor de cabeza
Falta de equilibrio
Náuseas
Vómitos

Los síntomas a raíz de los tumores de la fosa posterior también se presentan cuando el tumor daña estructuras locales, como los pares craneales. Los síntomas de daño a los pares craneales abarcan:

Pupilas dilatadas
Desviaciones del ojo
Debilidad de los músculos de la cara
Hipoacusia
Pérdida parcial de la sensibilidad en la cara
Alteraciones del sentido del gusto
Inestabilidad al caminar
Deficiencias en el campo visual

Signos y exámenes:

El diagnóstico se basa en la historia clínica y un examen físico completos, seguido de exámenes imagenológicos. La mejor manera de examinar la fosa posterior es con una resonancia magnética. Las tomografías computarizadas generalmente no son de ayuda.

Se pueden emplear los siguientes procedimientos para extirpar un pedazo de tejido del tumor para ayudar con el diagnóstico:

Cirugía cerebral abierta, llamada craneotomía posterior
Biopsia estereotáctica
