Síntomas:

El síntoma principal es una sensación de rotación que:

  • Se desencadena generalmente por un movimiento de la cabeza
  • A menudo comienza de manera repentina
  • Dura unos cuantos minutos o menos

Con mucha frecuencia, los pacientes dicen que no pueden voltearse en la cama o inclinar la cabeza para mirar hacia algo.

Otros síntomas pueden abarcar:

  • Quejas sobre la visión, como la percepción de que las cosas están saltando o moviéndose
  • Vómitos (en casos graves)

Signos y exámenes:

Para diagnosticar el vértigo postural benigno, el médico llevará a cabo un examen llamado maniobra de Dix-Hallpike. El médico le sostiene la cabeza en cierta posición y le pide a usted que se recueste rápidamente hacia atrás sobre una mesa. A medida que usted haga esto, el médico buscará movimientos oculares anormales y le preguntará si experimenta una sensación de vértigo. El médico puede utilizar diversos métodos para ayudar a evaluar los movimientos del ojo.

El examen físico es por lo demás normal. Se debe hacer una historia clínica completa y un examen neurológico cuidadoso con el fin de descartar otras razones para los síntomas. Los exámenes que se pueden hacer abarcan:
