El diagnóstico médico de la tiña se basa primordialmente en la apariencia de la piel. Si se necesitan exámenes, el hongo puede aparecer fluorescente cuando se examina la piel con una luz azul (llamada lámpara de Wood) en un cuarto oscuro. Se puede realizar un diagnóstico más preciso raspando el área de la piel afectada y examinando las células bajo el microscopio.
