Un xantoma luce como una inflamación o protuberancia bajo la piel y generalmente es plano, suave al tacto y de color amarillo, con bordes claramente definidos.
El médico examina la piel y generalmente puede diagnosticar un xantoma con sólo observarla. Una biopsia de la tumoración muestra un depósito de grasa.
