Síntomas:

Los síntomas pueden variar por edades y son afectados por el ambiente social de la persona. Pueden abarcar los siguientes:

Niños:

Tienen desagrado por sus propios genitales
Son rechazados por sus compañeros y se sienten aislados
Creen que ellos crecerán y llegarán a ser del sexo opuesto
Sufren depresión o ansiedad
Dicen que desean pertenecer al sexo opuesto

Adultos:

Se visten como si fueran del sexo opuesto
Se sienten aislados
Sufren depresión o ansiedad
Desean vivir como una persona del sexo opuesto
Desean deshacerse de sus propios genitales

Adultos o niños:

Cambian la forma de vestir y muestran hábitos característicos del sexo opuesto
Se alejan de la interacción social

Signos y exámenes:

La sensación de estar en el cuerpo del sexo o género "equivocado" debe durar al menos dos años para hacer el diagnóstico. La historia clínica y una evaluación psiquiátrica pueden confirmar el deseo constante de la persona de pertenecer al sexo opuesto. La elección del compañero puede ser del mismo sexo o del sexo opuesto.
