Definición:

El maltrato físico infantil o trauma infantil no accidental se refiere a fracturas y otros signos de lesión que ocurren cuando se golpea a un niño con ira.

Los signos físicos de maltrato infantil solían denominarse síndrome del niño maltratado. Este síndrome se refiere a múltiples fracturas que ocurren en momentos diferentes en niños demasiado pequeños como para haberlas sufrido a raíz de un accidente. La definición del maltrato infantil se ha pues expandido.

Causas:

El maltrato físico tiende a ocurrir en momentos de gran estrés. Muchas personas que infligen maltrato físico también fueron maltratados en su infancia y, como resultado, a menudo no se dan cuenta de que el maltrato no es la forma apropiada de disciplina.

Las personas que maltratan físicamente, a menudo, también tienen muy poca capacidad de controlar sus impulsos, lo cual impide que piensen en lo que sucede como resultado de sus acciones.

La tasa de maltrato infantil es bastante alta y la forma más común es el abandono.

Los mayores factores de riesgo que predisponen al maltrato infantil abarcan:

Alcoholismo.
Violencia doméstica.
Drogadicción.
Ser padre o madre soltera.
Falta de educación.
Pobreza.

Sin embargo, es importante destacar que los casos de maltrato infantil se encuentran en toda clase social u origen étnico. Es imposible diferenciar entre maltratadores y no maltratadores por su apariencia u origen.
