Síndrome de Reye - Overview

Definición:

Es un daño cerebral (encefalopatía) súbito (agudo) y problemas con la función hepática de causa desconocida.

El síndrome se ha presentado con el uso de ácido acetilsalicílico (aspirin ) para tratar la varicela o la gripe en los niños. Sin embargo, se ha vuelto muy raro, ya que el ácido acetilsalicílico ya no se recomienda para su uso rutinario en niños.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El síndrome de Reye se observa con más frecuencia en niños de 4 a 12 años de edad. La mayoría de los casos que ocurren con varicela se dan en niños de 5 a 9 años, mientras que aquellos que se presentan con la gripe (influenza tipo B) por lo general se dan en niños de 10 a 14 años.

Los niños con el síndrome de Reye se enferman de manera muy repentina. El síndrome de Reye en general se presenta después de una infección de las vías respiratorias altas o de una varicela, aproximadamente a la semana.
