No hay ningún síntoma. Los bebés que mueren a causa del SMSL no parecen sufrir ni luchar.
Con los resultados de la autopsia no se puede determinar la causa de muerte, pero éstos pueden ser útiles si se los ve como un medio de aportar algo al conocimiento existente acerca del SMSL. Las leyes estatales pueden exigir una autopsia en caso de una muerte inexplicable.
