Síntomas:

No hay síntomas. Los lactantes que mueren a causa del SMSL no parecen sufrir ni luchar.

Signos y exámenes:

Con los resultados de la autopsia no se puede determinar la causa de muerte, pero éstos pueden ser útiles si se les ve como un medio de aportar algo al conocimiento existente acerca del SMSL. Las leyes estatales pueden pedir una autopsia en caso de una muerte inexplicable.
