Anencefalia

Es la ausencia de una gran parte del cerebro y el cráneo.

La anencefalia es un defecto del tubo neural que se presenta al comienzo del desarrollo fetal. El defecto del tubo neural involucra el tejido que crece en el cerebro y la médula espinal. La anencefalia se presenta cuando la porción superior del tubo neural no logra cerrarse. El porqué de esta malformación no se conoce, pero las posibles causas incluyen las toxinas ambientales y la baja ingesta de ácido fólico durante el embarazo.
La anencefalia se presenta en alrededor de 4 por cada 10.000 neonatos, aunque estas cifras no son exactas, porque en muchos casos de estos embarazos se presenta aborto espontáneo. El hecho de tener un bebé anencefálico aumenta el riesgo de tener otro hijo con defectos en el tubo neural.
