Síntomas:

En la madre:

• Polihidramnios : es una condición que se detecta antes del nacimiento y en la cual el útero contiene grandes cantidades de líquido amniótico. El polihidramnios es usualmente un trastorno que sugiere algún tipo de problema en el curso del embarazo.

En el bebé:

• Ausencia de cráneo
• Ausencia de cerebro (los hemisferios cerebrales y el cerebelo)
• Anomalías en los rasgos faciales
• Defectos cardíacos

Signos y exámenes:

Los siguientes exámenes pueden ayudar a identificar la anencefalia:

• Examen de ácido fólico en suero antes del embarazo
• Amniocentesis (un examen que se practica a la madre para determinar si se están presentando incrementos en los niveles de alfa fetoproteína )
• Niveles de alfa fetoproteína durante el embarazo (los niveles elevados sugieren un defecto en la formación del tubo neural)
• Niveles de estriol en orina durante el embarazo
• Ultrasonido para confirmar el diagnóstico
