Síntomas:

  • Disminución o ausencia de crecimiento lineal ("declinación" en la curva de crecimiento)
  • Falta de higiene apropiada
  • Problemas de interacción entre la madre y el niño
  • Peso menor al quinto percentil o una tasa inadecuada de aumento de peso

Signos y exámenes:

El primer paso es una evaluación cuidadosa por parte del médico. Un examen físico, la historia clínica y pruebas de laboratorio simples se pueden utilizar para descartar otras afecciones mayores como la causa. Igualmente, el médico examinará la curva de crecimiento del paciente.

El médico debe comprometer a los miembros de la familia y a las agencias de servicio social para ayudar a la madre. La alimentación del niño se debe incrementar gradualmente a 150 calorías por kg al día.

Si el médico está preocupado por la seguridad del niño o si el tratamiento no ha sido efectivo, es posible que el niño necesite permanecer en el hospital.
