Retinopatía serosa central

Definición:

Es una enfermedad que provoca la acumulación de líquido por debajo de la retina, la parte posterior del ojo interno que envía la información de la vista al cerebro. El líquido se filtra desde la capa de vasos sanguíneos que se encuentra por debajo de la retina, un área llamada coroides.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

La causa de esta afección se desconoce.

Los hombres resultan afectados con mayor frecuencia que las mujeres y la afección es más común alrededor de los 45 años, pero cualquier persona puede resultar afectada.

El estrés parece ser un factor de riesgo. Los estudios preliminares encontraron que las personas con personalidades agresivas "tipo A" que están bajo mucho estrés pueden ser más propensas a desarrollar retinopatía serosa central.

La afección también puede ocurrir como complicación del uso de medicamentos esteroides.
