Definición:

Una catarata congénita es la opacidad del cristalino del ojo presente en el momento de nacer. El cristalino del ojo normalmente es una estructura transparente, que enfoca la luz recibida por el ojo sobre la retina .

El número de personas que nacen con cataratas es bajo y en la mayoría de los pacientes no se puede encontrar una causa específica. Las posibles causas de las cataratas congénitas abarcan las siguientes:
