Prevención:

Muchas causas de la atrofia del nervio óptico no se pueden prevenir.

Las formas de protegerse usted mismo abarcan:

Los adultos mayores deben procurar tener un manejo cuidadoso de su presión arterial por parte del médico.
Prevenir lesiones faciales usando las precauciones de seguridad normales. La mayoría de las lesiones a la cara están relacionadas con accidentes automovilísticos y se pueden prevenir con el uso del cinturón de seguridad.
Programar un examen oftalmológico anual para verificar si hay glaucoma.

El metanol, el cual se encuentra en el alcohol de fabricación casera, puede causar atrofia del nervio óptico en ambos ojos. Nunca tome este tipo de alcohol ni otras formas de alcohol que no estén hechas expresamente para beber.
