Síndrome de Ramsay Hunt

Definición:

Es un trastorno neurológico causado por un virus ( varicela zoster ) que afecta ciertos nervios de la cabeza.

Causas, incidencia y factores de riesgo:

El virus varicela zoster provoca el síndrome de Ramsay Hunt y otra causa común de debilidad facial, la parálisis de Bell (en la cual no se presenta erupción cutánea).

Este virus está dentro de la familia del virus herpes humano que ocasiona herpes febril en la boca y herpes genital. Este virus también ocasiona herpes zóster (culebrilla) y varicela.

En las personas con el síndrome de Ramsay Hunt, se cree que este virus infecta el nervio facial cercano al oído interno, lo cual ocasiona irritación e hinchazón.
