La progeria es un padecimiento raro que se destaca porque los síntomas se asemejan bastante al envejecimiento humano normal, pero ocurre en niños pequeños.

Noventa por ciento de los niños con progeria tienen una mutación en el gen que codifica la proteína lamina A. La progeria generalmente ocurre sin causa y no se observa en hermanos de niños afectados, aunque en circunstancias muy poco comunes, más de un niño en una familia puede tener esta enfermedad.
