Las manchas flotantes que algunas veces se observan frente a los ojos en realidad no están sobre la superficie de los ojos sino dentro de ellos y corresponden a pequeños detritos celulares que aparecen y desaparecen sin tratamiento. Para algunas personas, estas "moscas volantes" lucen como manchas, mientras que para otras son como pequeños hilos.

La mayor parte del tiempo no son preocupantes, aunque algunas veces pueden ser un síntoma de desgarro retinal. Si se observa un incremento súbito en las manchas o manchas junto con destellos de luces, podría ser un síntoma de desprendimiento de retina y se debe consultar al oftalmólogo. Si se presentan otros trastornos visuales, se recomienda ver el artículo sobre alteraciones visuales.
