A pesar de la creencia popular de que la vitamina C puede curar el resfriado común, la evidencia científica al respecto es controversial.

Las dosis grandes de vitamina C, por ejemplo, pueden ayudar a reducir la duración de un resfriado, pero no parecen proteger contra uno en primer lugar, incluso después de la exposición a un virus del resfriado.

Para comenzar, la vitamina C puede únicamente servir en caso de un resfriado si uno tiene bajos niveles de este nutriente. Por ejemplo, la vitamina puede ser útil para prevenir un resfriado si usted vive en ambientes de temperaturas muy bajas o si habitualmente está involucrado en ejercicio extenuante, como correr una maratón.

La probabilidad de éxito puede ser muy individual: algunas personas mejoran, mientras que otras no.

Las personas que sufren de enfermedad renal deben evitar los suplementos de vitamina C. La mayoría de los expertos aconseja satisfacer los requerimientos diarios de vitaminas y minerales consumiendo una dieta balanceada. Tomar más de 500 mg de vitamina C en cualquier momento no ofrece ninguna ventaja, ya que más de esa cantidad simplemente se pierde a través de la micción o no es absorbida.
