Un bebé se considera recién nacido hasta que cumple un mes de vida. El período del neonato es definido y es importante porque representa un período corto de la vida cuando los cambios son muy rápidos y cuando se pueden presentar muchos hechos críticos.

Durante los primeros 30 días, se descubre la mayoría de los defectos congénitos (como la enfermedad cardíaca congénita). Las anomalías genéticas se pueden manifestar por sí mismas y es el momento en que se descubren infecciones como el herpes congénito , los estreptococos del grupo B , la toxoplasmosis y otras, a medida que comienzan a tener efectos clínicos.
