Definición:

Es el análisis bajo un microscopio de las células recolectadas de una parte del cuerpo. Esto se hace para determinar cuál es su apariencia, cómo se forman y cómo funcionan.

Este examen se utiliza con frecuencia para buscar cánceres y cambios precancerosos. Igualmente se puede emplear para buscar infecciones virales en las células. El examen difiere de una biopsia en que únicamente se examinan células y no pedazos de tejido.

La citología vaginal (frotis de Pap) es una evaluación citológica común en la cual se examinan células del cuello uterino. Algunos otros ejemplos abarcan:
