Virilización - Overview

Overview

Definición:

Es cuando una mujer desarrolla características sexuales masculinas o un niño recién nacido que tiene aumento de las características masculinas al nacer.

Información:

La virilización puede ser causada por:

Exceso de producción de testosterona
Uso de esteroides anabolizantes

En las niñas recién nacidas, la afección puede ser causada por:

Ciertos medicamentos que la madre tomó durante el embarazo
Hiperplasia suprarrenal congénita en el bebé o la madre
Otras afecciones médicas en la madre (como tumores de los ovarios o glándulas suprarrenales que liberan hormonas masculinas)

Los signos de virilización en una mujer pueden abarcar:

Engrosamiento de la voz
Vello facial
Incremento de vello corporal
Calvicie de patrón masculino
Hinchazón del clítoris

Los exámenes pueden abarcar:

Exámenes de sangre para detectar exceso de testosterona en las mujeres
Tomografía computarizada, resonancia magnética o ecografía para descartar tumores de los ovarios y las glándulas suprarrenales
