Definición:

Es un dispositivo acompañado de luz que se utiliza para mirar dentro de una cavidad u órgano corporal. Este dispositivo se inserta a través de una abertura natural, como la boca durante una broncoscopia , el recto en caso de una sigmoidoscopia o la vagina en una cistoscopia .

Un procedimiento médico que utilice cualquier tipo de endoscopio se denomina endoscopia .
