Perímetro cefálico - Overview

Definición:

Es la medición del perímetro de la cabeza de un niño en su parte más grande. Se mide la distancia que va desde la parte por encima de las cejas y de las orejas y alrededor de la parte posterior de la cabeza.

Información:

Durante los chequeos de rutina, se mide la distancia en centímetros o pulgadas y se compara con:

  • Mediciones anteriores del perímetro cefálico del niño.
  • Los rangos normales para el sexo y la edad de un niño (semanas, meses), con base en valores que los expertos han obtenido para las tasas de crecimiento normal de las cabezas de bebés y lactantes.

La medición del perímetro cefálico es una parte importante del control de rutina del niño sano. Durante el control del niño sano, un cambio del crecimiento normal de la cabeza esperado puede alertar al médico sobre un posible problema.

Por ejemplo, una cabeza más grande de lo normal o que se está incrementando en tamaño más rápidamente de lo normal puede ser una señal de problemas graves, incluyendo la presencia de agua en el cerebro (hidrocefalia).

Un tamaño de la cabeza demasiado pequeño (llamado microcefalia) o una tasa de crecimiento demasiado lenta puede ser una señal de que el cerebro no se está desarrollando apropiadamente.
