Las cantidades o raciones dietéticas recomendadas se definen como los niveles de ingesta de nutrientes esenciales que, sobre la base del conocimiento científico, el Comité de Nutrición y Alimentos ( Food and Nutrition Board ) considera que satisfacen las necesidades nutricionales conocidas de prácticamente todas las personas saludables.

La mejor manera de satisfacer los requerimientos diarios de las vitaminas esenciales es consumir una dieta balanceada , que contenga una variedad de productos de los grupos básicos de alimentos .

Las recomendaciones específicas para cada vitamina dependen de la edad, del sexo y de otros factores (como el embarazo).
