Recomendaciones:

El Comité de Nutrición y Alimentos del Instituto de Medicina (Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine ) recomienda los siguientes consumos en la dieta para el fluoruro:

Bebés:

  • 0 a 6 meses: 0.1 miligramos por día (mg/día)
  • 7-12 meses: 0.5 mg/día

Niños:

  • 1 - 3 años: 0.7 mg/día
  • 4 - 8 años: 1.0 mg/día
  • 9 - 13 años: 2.0 mg/día

Adolescentes y adultos:

  • Hombres de 14 a 18 años: 3.0 mg/día
  • Hombres de 18 años en adelante: 4.0 mg/día
  • Mujeres de 14 años en adelante: 3.0 mg/día

La mejor manera de obtener los requerimientos diarios de vitaminas esenciales es consumir una dieta balanceada que contenga una variedad de alimentos de la MiPlato.

Las recomendaciones específicas dependen de la edad y del sexo. Pregúntele al médico cuál es la mejor cantidad en su caso.

Para ayudar a verificar que los bebés y los niños no reciban demasiado fluoruro:

  • Pregúntele al médico acerca del tipo de agua que se debe usar en la leche maternizada (fórmula) concentrada o en polvo.
  • No use ningún suplemento de fluoruro sin consultar con su médico.
  • Evite el uso de pasta dental con fluoruro en los bebés menores de dos años.
  • Use sólo una cantidad de pasta dental con fluoruro del tamaño de un guisante en niños menores de dos años.
  • Evite los enjuagues bucales con fluoruro en los niños menores de seis años.
