La deficiencia de fluoruro se puede manifestar en un aumento de las caries dentales y en la debilidad de huesos y dientes. Un suplemento de fluoruro es necesario para prevenir las caries, especialmente en los niños, si el agua del grifo no está fluorada. Como ejemplo, el agua de pozos no está fluorada.

El exceso de fluoruro en la dieta es extremadamente raro.
