Efectos secundarios:

Los efectos secundarios por el aumento en la ingesta de magnesio no son muy comunes debido a que el organismo elimina las cantidades en exceso. Dicho exceso de magnesio se produce casi siempre sólo cuando se suministra como medicamento.

La falta (deficiencia) de magnesio es poco común y los síntomas son, entre otros:

  • Demasiada excitabilidad
  • Debilidad muscular
  • Somnolencia

La deficiencia de magnesio puede ocurrir en personas alcohólicas o en aquellas que absorben menos magnesio debido a:

  • Quemaduras
  • Ciertos medicamentos
  • Niveles sanguíneos bajos de calcio
  • Problemas para absorber los nutrientes desde el tubo digestivo ( malabsorción)
  • Cirugía

Los síntomas debido a una deficiencia de magnesio tienen tres categorías:

Síntomas iniciales:

  • Anorexia
  • Apatía
  • Confusión
  • Fatiga
  • Insomnio
  • Irritabilidad
  • Fasciculaciones musculares
  • Memoria deficiente
  • Capacidad deficiente para el aprendizaje

Síntomas de deficiencia moderada:

  • Cambios cardíacos (cardiovasculares)
  • Latidos cardíacos rápidos

Deficiencia severa:

  • Contracción muscular continua
  • Delirio
  • Entumecimiento
  • Ver o escuchar cosas que realmente no existen (alucinaciones)
  • Hormigueo
