Las personas con cáncer requieren frecuentemente una dieta alta en calorías para evitar la pérdida de peso; al igual que de una dieta alta en proteínas para evitar la atrofia muscular. Los alimentos que tienen alto contenido de calorías y proteínas son la mantequilla de maní, la leche entera, las malteadas, las carnes y los quesos, entre otros.

Algunas personas con cáncer desarrollan una aversión a las grasas. Si esto sucede, consuma alimentos ricos en proteínas con bajo contenido de grasa tales como malteadas bajas en grasa, yogur, requesón o cuajada, carnes magras.

Para que la dieta se mantenga bien balanceada, uno debe consumir frutas y verduras. Para aumentar las calorías, se deben consumir más jugos de frutas o frutas deshidratadas en vez de frutas enteras. El hecho de escoger vegetales ricos en calorías, como el maíz y la arveja, también aumentará las calorías en la dieta.
