Recomendaciones:

El Consejo de la Asociación Médica Estadounidense sobre Asuntos Científicos (American Medical Association Council on Scientific Affairs) establece que beber café o té con moderación probablemente no tenga efectos negativos sobre la salud, en tanto uno lleve un estilo de vida por lo demás saludable.

  • Tres tazas de café de 8 onzas (aproximadamente 250 miligramos de cafeína) por día y 5 raciones de bebidas gaseosas cafeinadas o té se consideran una cantidad moderada o promedio de cafeína.
  • Diez tazas de 8 onzas de café por día se consideran un consumo excesivo de cafeína.

Las personas que tal vez necesiten evitar la cafeína o sólo beberla en cantidades pequeñas abarcan:

Vigile cuidadosamente la cantidad de cafeína que reciben los niños. Aunque la cafeína es segura en cantidades moderadas, es un estimulante. Un niño hiperactivo posiblemente deba evitar la cafeína.

Las cantidades pequeñas de cafeína durante el embarazo son seguras, pero las grandes cantidades se desaconsejan enfáticamente.

  • La cafeína, como el alcohol, viaja a través del torrente sanguíneo hasta la placenta y puede tener un efecto negativo en su bebé. Debido a que la cafeína es un estimulante, aumenta su frecuencia cardíaca y el metabolismo, los cuales afectan directamente al bebé.
  • No es problema tomar una o dos tazas de café, té o cola a la semana, pero trate de prescindir por completo de ellas si puede.
