El amoníaco es un gas fuerte e incoloro. Si el gas se disuelve en agua, se denomina amoníaco líquido. La intoxicación puede ocurrir si una persona inhala dicho gas. La intoxicación también puede ocurrir si la persona ingiere o toca productos que contengan cantidades muy grandes de amoníaco.
