Extirpación de la glándula tiroides
Definición:
Es la cirugÃa para extirpar todo o parte de la glándula tiroides.
- Con la tiroidectomÃa total se extirpa toda la glándula
- Con la tiroidectomÃa parcial o subtotal se extirpa parte de esta glándula
La glándula tiroides es parte del sistema endocrino y juega un papel importante en la regulación del metabolismo corporal.

Descripción:
La tiroidectomÃa se lleva a cabo bajo anestesia general, con el paciente dormido y sin sentir dolor. Algunas veces, se hace con anestesia regional, es decir, con el paciente despierto pero sin sentir dolor. El cirujano hace una incisión en el cuello, localiza la glándula y la extirpa parcial o totalmente, dependiendo del procedimiento particular.
Indicaciones:
La tiroidectomÃa se puede recomendar para lo siguiente:
- Hipertiroidismo (tiroides hiperactiva)
- Tirotoxicosis
- Hipotiroidismo (tiroides hipoactiva) con agrandamiento de la glándula
- Cáncer de tiroides
- Inflamación de la tiroides ( bocio no tóxico )
- Enfermedad de Hashimoto (un tipo de hipotiroidismo)
Este procedimiento también se puede realizar si el paciente con hipertiroidismo no desea el tratamiento con yodo radiactivo y que no puede ser tratado con medicamentos antitiroideos.
