Después del procedimiento:

Su hijo necesitará permanecer acostado en posición horizontal durante 24 horas la primera vez que le coloquen una derivación. Después de eso, le ayudarán a sentarse.

La estadía normal en el hospital es de 3 a 4 días. El médico verificará con frecuencia los signos vitales y el estado neurológico. Su hijo puede recibir medicamento para el dolor. Igualmente, se le administran líquidos y antibióticos por vía intravenosa. Se revisará la derivación para comprobar que esté funcionando adecuadamente.

Pronóstico:

La colocación de una derivación generalmente es efectiva para reducir la presión en el cerebro. Pero si la hidrocefalia se relaciona con otras afecciones, como la espina bífida, tumor cerebral, meningitis, encefalitis o hemorragia, estas enfermedades podrían afectar el pronóstico. La severidad de la hidrocefalia presente antes de la cirugía también afectará el pronóstico.

Hay grupos de apoyo disponibles en la mayoría de las áreas para las familias de niños con hidrocefalia o espina bífida.

Las mayores complicaciones de las cuales se debe estar pendiente son una derivación infectada y un bloqueo de la derivación.
