Los riesgos de cualquier cirugÃa son:
- Sangrado
- Infección
Otros problemas abarcan mal funcionamiento u obstrucción de la derivación e infección. Si el mal funcionamiento ocurre debido al crecimiento de la persona, será necesario reemplazar la derivación con un catéter más largo. Los sÃntomas de mal funcionamiento de la derivación pueden ser: dolor de cabeza , fiebre , somnolencia y convulsiones .
Como con cualquier otra cirugÃa del cerebro, existe riesgo para el tejido cerebral, ya que el catéter de la derivación debe pasar a través de dicho tejido para ingresar al ventrÃculo. Existe un riesgo pequeño de que se presente daño al tejido cerebral, ocasionando una deficiencia neurológica .
