El médico llevará a cabo un examen físico, incluyendo una evaluación minuciosa de la boca y las encías, y hará preguntas como:

  • ¿En qué orden hicieron erupción los dientes?
  • ¿A qué edad se comenzó a desarrollar la dentición en otros miembros de la familia?
  • ¿Hay otros familiares a quienes les faltan dientes que nunca "aparecieron"?
  • ¿Qué otros síntomas se presentan también?

Un bebé que presente retraso o ausencia en la formación de los dientes puede tener otros signos y síntomas que, tomados en conjunto, definen un síndrome o afección específica.

Generalmente, no hay necesidad de realizar exámenes diagnósticos, a menos que se sospeche de una enfermedad como la causa. Con mucha frecuencia, el retraso en la formación de la dentición es un hallazgo normal. Ocasionalmente será necesario tomar radiografías dentales.
