Un dolor de diente o dolor de muela suele ser el resultado de  caries dentales  o algunas veces de una infección. La caries dentales a menudo son causadas por una  higiene dental  deficiente, aunque la tendencia a desarrollarlas es en parte hereditaria.

Hay ocasiones en que el dolor en otras partes del cuerpo se percibe como si ocurriera en los dientes (lo que se denomina dolor referido o irradiado).
